Acquia Alternatives: 5 Options, Sorted by What You're Replacing

2026-10-15 Estimating read time...

Key Takeaways

  • Acquia now sells Drupal hosting, a multisite tool, a SaaS CMS, a customer data platform and a DAM, so a useful shortlist of Acquia alternatives starts with the line on the contract you're replacing.
  • Moving to another Drupal host such as Pantheon (site plans from $55 a month) or Upsun keeps your code and keeps the upgrade projects too, and Drupal 10 reaches end of life on December 9, 2026 wherever it's hosted.
  • For marketing teams running many sites, leaving Drupal for a managed federated platform is what takes upgrades and patching off the list, and The Salvation Army reports 70% less time spent publishing since it swapped five separate CMSs for one.
  • Acquia's FedRAMP-authorized hosting, round-the-clock Drupal support and single contract for website and DAM are worth weighing before you leave, though its own MCP server is still an experimental, per-site setting in Source CMS.

Nobody leaves all of Acquia at once. You leave one line of the contract, and because Acquia quotes its hosting deal by deal, the hunt for Acquia alternatives usually starts when one renewal quote lands and someone asks what that piece should cost on its own.

If the piece is the website, decide whether you're leaving Drupal or only Acquia's hosting before you talk to a single vendor. Another Drupal host keeps your code, and the major-version upgrades and the developer queue come with it, so for a marketing team running dozens of sites the move that changes the bill is a managed platform that isn't Drupal at all. Here are five options sorted by that split, ours first.

Acquia is five products now, so name the one you're replacing

Acquia's product page sells Acquia Source as a "command center" for Drupal, entered through Source CMS (a SaaS CMS), Cloud Platform (hosting) or the DAM it used to sell as Widen, plus add-ons. Some of it is hard to match. Cloud Platform lists FedRAMP authorization (the US federal government's sign-off for cloud services) next to PCI and HIPAA, Site Factory pushes one update across a whole portfolio from a single console with a 99.95% uptime SLA, and the DAM's Drupal connector comes in every tier at no extra cost.

What you're replacing Acquia's name Plain English Where to look
Drupal hosting Cloud Platform Acquia runs the servers, security patches and deploy tools for your Drupal site Pantheon or Upsun to keep Drupal, Content. One, WordPress VIP or Sitecore to leave it
Many sites from one codebase Site Factory, Multi-Experience Operations One shared set of code that stamps out and updates dozens or hundreds of sites Pantheon Custom Upstreams, Content. One federated multisite, WordPress VIP network sites
A hosted CMS for marketers Source CMS Drupal sold as software-as-a-service, with pages built by prompt or drag and drop Content. One, Sitecore
Customer data Acquia CDP One profile per customer, built from their visits, emails and purchases and used for targeting Twilio Segment, Salesforce Data 360
Images, video and brand files Acquia DAM (formerly Widen) A governed library where approved assets live Bynder, Brandfolder, Canto, Adobe, SitecoreAI DAM

Acquia's lineup and where each piece's alternatives live. Accurate as of October 2026.

If most of your Acquia spend is Cloud Platform or Site Factory, you're shopping for a website platform, and the five options below are that shortlist.

Keep Drupal or leave it? That's the choice that sets your costs

Drupal's own release schedule puts Drupal 10's end of life on December 9, 2026, with no new releases after that date, and Drupal 7 support already ended on January 5, 2025. The upgrade lives in your modules, themes and custom work, not on the servers, so it follows your code to whichever host you pick.

Teams put off the bigger move for sensible reasons, from years of custom modules that feel like money already spent to the search traffic a replatform puts at risk. But signing a fresh hosting term and then funding a major-version upgrade inside it means paying for two projects instead of one, and for a marketing team with 60 location sites the upgrade is usually the bigger of the two. If you've already decided Drupal itself is the problem, our Drupal alternative guide goes further down that road.

1. Content. One, for many sites without a Drupal codebase to babysit

Read Now: Drupal vs Content.One

We built Content. One (we were Zesty.io until November 2025) for organizations that run lots of sites, and the first thing Acquia teams notice is what drops off their to-do list. Hosting and platform patching are ours, so nobody on your side schedules a core or module update again.

Here's how it works. Put one of your Drupal domains into launch.content.one and it reads that site, then hands you a Content. One instance already configured around it.

The Drupal agency work comes from us. Our On-Demand Developers are Content. One engineers who work inside your team on a contract of six to twelve months, part-time or full-time, handle the migration off Drupal end to end, wire your CRM in through proper APIs instead of Zapier workarounds, and pick up anything that breaks the moment it's triaged, over a Slack or Teams channel straight to the engineer on your account. At The Salvation Army, our engineers acted as the digital team's "full development arm", folding five CMS platforms into one and then running releases, integrations and performance monitoring themselves.

Headquarters publishes once and the content syndicates to every regional site, while local teams localize inside components corporate has locked. Across The Salvation Army's 50+ domains, its customer story reports 70% less time spent publishing and pages that load 4x faster.

On the Scale plan and above, governance is set once for the whole portfolio. Roles can be scoped as broadly as a whole site or as tightly as one field, approval paths can differ by region, locale or content type, and the audit log can't be edited or deleted, even by an admin. Developers keep a code workflow too, with versioned templates, side-by-side diffs, one-click rollback and VS Code editing synced to GitHub.

Marketers can build by prompting, which is where the developer queue gets shorter. Through our MCP server, someone on your team can ask Claude, Gemini or any other MCP-compatible assistant for a new content model and get a proposed schema back, relationships and starter content included, hand it a brief and get a page built to your brand guidelines in a minute or two, or add a Meta Pixel or another tracking script and choose where it goes without filing a developer ticket.

Plans are priced by seats (anyone with edit access, while read-only viewers are unlimited) and by connected domains, with everything under each domain included and hosting part of the deal. We don't publish prices, though 501(c)(3) nonprofits and education institutions get discounts. We're a website and content platform, so if Acquia CDP does serious work for you, plan to keep a dedicated CDP next to us.

2. Pantheon, if you want to keep Drupal and change the host

Pantheon hosts Drupal, WordPress and Next.js sites. For portfolios, its Custom Upstreams give your developers one shared codebase that new sites start from, which is how Forum One runs nearly 200 satellite sites for Fairfax County Public Schools, according to Pantheon's docs.

Pricing is published per site, from $55 a month for a Basic site to $1,150 for Performance XL on monthly billing, while Elite sites and the Platinum and Diamond workspaces for enterprise portfolios are quote-based (accurate as of October 2026). It's still Drupal, so core and module upgrades stay with your team, and each site's owner applies Custom Upstream updates, where Site Factory pushes them from one console.

3. Upsun, if your developers want cloud choice and usage pricing

Upsun, formerly Platform.sh, is a platform-as-a-service (managed infrastructure your developers deploy to with Git) for Drupal and plenty of other stacks, and it lets you pick AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, OVHcloud or IBM Cloud underneath. Its pricing skips plans entirely, with a €9 monthly fee per project, €10 per user license and per-second billing for the CPU, memory and storage you provision, plus a 15-day free trial (euro list prices, accurate as of October 2026). Editing and governance come from the CMS you run on it, and with a fee per project, price the whole portfolio before comparing quotes.

4. WordPress VIP, if your editors would rather work in WordPress

WordPress VIP is managed enterprise WordPress, and its packages are built around site counts, with Standard covering up to 10 network sites on a 99.95% uptime SLA, Enhanced up to 100 and Signature up to 1,000, both on 99.99%, and all three quote-based (accurate as of October 2026). Going from Drupal to WordPress is a rebuild, so content and templates move while custom Drupal modules don't, and a 150-site network would sit above Enhanced and inside Signature.

5. Sitecore, if you want to swap one suite for another

SitecoreAI puts a CMS, a DAM, content operations, audience insight for personalization and 20-plus prebuilt AI agents in one platform, and Sitecore says agent use carries no per-token pricing. It's the closest like-for-like if you use Acquia's website, DAM and personalization together and want them under one contract again. Pricing is quote-based (Sitecore publishes no price list), leaving Drupal for it means a full rebuild, and our Sitecore alternative guide covers the trade-offs from the other side.

Looking for Acquia DAM alternatives or a new CDP instead?

Then you don't need a new website platform. For customer data, Twilio Segment and Salesforce Data 360 (renamed from Data Cloud) both build unified customer profiles and feed whichever CMS you run. For assets, Acquia's own comparison pages line Acquia DAM up against Bynder, Brandfolder, Canto and Adobe. Acquia's DAM tiers run from 50 users and 1 TB of storage up to unlimited users and 10 TB, so bring your user count and library size to every demo.

Every option here has an MCP server, so ask who it's built for

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard that lets an AI assistant like Claude work inside another tool, and every website platform here has an MCP server, Acquia included, so ask how finished each one is and who it's for. Acquia's Source CMS MCP server is experimental and switched on site by site, Pantheon's went into beta in October 2026 for developers, and Upsun's stays read-only until you add a header that allows writes. WordPress VIP opened its Secure MCP endpoint to all customers in July 2026 with agents held to each user's Dashboard permissions, and SitecoreAI lists MCPs alongside its agents.

Our MCP server went generally available on June 15, 2026 for marketers first, and whatever an agent does in your instance is checked against the same roles and permissions your editors work under. Randy Apuzzo, our founder and CEO, said at launch that the agentic page creator takes enterprise page workflows from 32 hours down to one.

How to choose between Acquia competitors

Start with the line on the contract. If your Drupal team is happy and the hosting bill is the problem, Pantheon gives you published per-site prices and Upsun gives you usage pricing and a choice of cloud, while editors who'd rather be in WordPress should look at VIP and suite buyers at Sitecore. Whichever you pick, map your redirects before the build starts, which our CMS migration guide walks through.

For a marketing team running dozens of sites, a cheaper Drupal host trims this year's invoice, and leaving Drupal for a managed platform is what takes the next major-version upgrade off it for good. If that's the stack you're weighing, put one of your Acquia-hosted domains into launch.content.one and see it come back as a Content. One instance.

FAQ

Are Acquia and Drupal the same?

No. Drupal is free, open-source software any host can run, and Acquia is a commercial company selling hosting, tools and support around it. Even Acquia's newer Source CMS is Drupal underneath, with Drupal Canvas as its drag-and-drop page builder.

Is Acquia a SaaS company?

Partly. Source CMS is sold as SaaS and the DAM as annual SaaS subscriptions, while Cloud Platform and Site Factory are managed hosting where you keep ownership of your own Drupal codebase.

How much does Acquia cost?

Acquia pricing isn't published. Cloud Platform is quoted on site count, traffic, storage, features and support tier across Professional, Business and Elite levels, and the DAM comes in Workgroup, Mid-Market and Enterprise tiers with implementation priced up front.

Who are Acquia's main competitors?

It depends on the product. Acquia's own comparison pages line up Adobe Experience Manager, Sitecore, Optimizely and WordPress VIP against its CMS, Siteimprove against Web Governance, and HubSpot and Marketo against Campaign Studio, its marketing automation tool, which makes a fair map of Acquia competitors by category.

Pantheon vs Acquia, which is better for Drupal hosting?

It comes down to how you want to buy. Pantheon suits teams that want to pay per site with prices on the page and run WordPress or Next.js next to Drupal, and Acquia suits teams that want one negotiated contract covering hosting, multisite tooling and a DAM.

Can you leave Acquia and keep Drupal?

Yes. Pantheon's dashboard has a Migrate Existing Site button with an Acquia path, but it's supported for Drupal 7 sites only, so modern Drupal sites move over through a Composer-based process (Composer being the tool that manages a Drupal site's modules).

Which Acquia alternative works for government or higher education?

Start with compliance, then site count. Pantheon lists FERPA, the US student-records law, on every plan, Content. One's audit logs are built to support SOC 2 and HIPAA audits, and Acquia's FedRAMP authorization is the bar a federal team should hold every alternative to.
